Shuttle missions AND slots update

Hello Captains,

Thanks for your feedback on the AND shuttle missions! We wanted to shed some light on how the shuttle missions are calculated, and some changes we made before this event that should help you see differences for the AND missions.

Prior to our fix several weeks ago, there was a bug with the AND missions where they were actually averaging the crew’s skill values between the two skills. This meant that AND missions were always worse than single skill missons. That wasn’t our intention when we built them, so we fixed the bug by making AND missions use your highest-value skill between the skills and then providing a percentage bonus from the second skill on top of the highest skill. The original goal behind these missions was to reward players for having crew with both the skills needed, and we feel like this change does that.

After reviewing your feedback, we’re improving the second skill’s bonus further, making those crew more powerful for Faction Missions that have an AND slot. This change went out prior to today’s event, so you should see the effects in this week’s event. Regarding the crew sorting for these slots, that’s something that requires a client change, so we’re looking to see if we can get it in the next client build.

Thanks for the update. Can you possibly clarify about the previous event’s success rate? Was the percentage showing on the crew selection screen off and shuttles were succeeding at an appropriate rate or was the success rate off?

a bug. wow. must’ve been extremely difficult to reproduce it. it took about 15 months to track it down. lame. you could’ve just said it’s being changed and told us how. a bug. sounds all too familiar.

So far there is no indication that the shown percentages and the actual success rates are off or incorrect. That said, we’ll continue looking into it, and if there is a bug, we’ll fix it. But right now there’s no indication on our end that it wasn’t working correctly. We’ve been reviewing a lot of the shuttles through our logging system, and haven’t seen any glaring errors, but investigation continues.

It takes time to go through and discuss with the team, determine what (if anything) we want to change, and then make the change. Do we wish we had fixed it earlier? Absolutely. But in the end, the team viewed this issue as a bug, and addressed it with the 2.0 client update.

and word on the OR slots behavior?  (example: Captain Scott on a Sci OR ENG slot.  He has only engineering. Add a Science booster and his success percentage goes up)  edit: this behavior appears to be fixed!!!!

Edit:  use of the word “bug” here seems really disingenuous, it was a design choice that didn’t work out as intended and got left behind.  a bug implies it is not functioning as it is supposed to. 

Again, those of us who have looked at this client side extensively aren’t convinced this is all fixed, there is more odd behavior than this, like the OR bug mentioned above that appeared to be introduced at the same time.

This would not be the first time you had a demonstrable client-end problem with one of your systems that could not be reproduced on your server end. It would behoove you to have people testing these things with the same live, real client and live, real game accounts when people are providing you with substantial proof that your system is not working as it should.

Regardless of what math you think is happening, the system is telling people for AND shuttles that the best people to send are people who don’t even have both of the AND skills listed. That’s a problem.

Wow, he was direct but he was by no means rude, he asked for the numbers, cited yes it could be gotten on his own, but thought it would be better to just ask.  This was a completely reasonable request, he didn’t say please but he didn’t say “you owe us” or anything like that.

Is there anything, not just on these forums, but in actual real life that you don’t complain about?  If I were you, I wouldn’t care what I thought either, but damn if you don’t sound like that kid in Wedding Crashers that just yells “Whatever, make me a bicycle, clown!... Shut your mouth, funny guy, and make it!”

sure, and i’ll take a few beers with that. Nod needs you sticking up for him like we need more AND slots in faction events… wait…

anyway, i’m not as dissatisfied with the game as i am with misinformation and lack of information that is essential to the way we play the game.

the AND slots mechanics have affected many players’ decisions on what crew to acquire for over a year. now the secondary skill becomes practically irrelevant just like that, making all that dual skill crew second rate. playing it off like a bug after all this time is dis-tactful. you’re damn right that being treated like that makes me want to speak to DB’s people in a rude manner, to say the least.

Says a lot more about you than it does DB’s product development and customer service/communication practices.  It’s a game where you are not happy with how they are handling development, communication, and rollout, but you seem to react to it like DB is an insurance company denying your kid coverage for their metastasizing pediatric cancer.

how did you find my picture! but seriously, that kid is going to get more out of life than the polite kid next to him. it takes a while to realize it, but niceties aren’t always the way to go, in general.

Sure. It’s a good point, and it’s how we’re continuing to investigate. In general when we say we’re investigating server-side, what we mean is we log exactly what a player sees on the client, and the results that were presented to them. We then look at and review the actual displayed chances, skills, and results as shown to players.

We’ll keep investigating; the feedback is not being ignored, but at this time we can’t say that there’s an issue with displayed chances. If we find something, we’ll work to identify the cause and address the issue.
