What if you were a mediocre musician?

It was your passion… but you just weren’t that good?

I guess it would apply to anything…

In the Star Trek mentality… anyone who sucks at what they love to do…would get by just fine… no worries… they would be encouraged to keep on sucking at what they do.

...(sounds like 21st century politicians)

I like the post!

But I think that just as the US military, Starfleet would have certain standards, just as they would for any billet in the fleet.  smile

p.s.  I am a professional musician, and am far from starving, lol

Well given my background is in tech support and forensics it’s likely I’d just be an engineer like my favorite char, Scotty. And I would hope medicine was advanced enough it would let me walk again, even if I need some kind of exoskeleton. smile

I would still be an engineer. Probably around replication and tooling. Maybe I would help to colonize a planet and build a huge array of geothermal power sources. Then I could experiment with replicators building replicators, and robots and force-field hologram workers to build tooling for non-replicatable things. My vision is to prototype concepts on the Holodeck, and then give the order, and have them instantly produced and beamed there. A 3D printer on Star Trek steroids. In many ways it’s an engineer’s paradise—all you need to make things is power, raw materials, and knowledge.

I would be a holoprogrammer and a holonovelist.  My goal would be to create a holonovel that evolves and founds its own colony.  Sure, that never works out well.  But it would still be cool.

My realistic response to the question (is that even possible?)...

I would be a space-time theorist/explorer.

...researching, exploring, and experimenting with variables that can be modified in the past, present or future for the greater betterment.

Nothing for personal benefit (i.e. the loss of a loved one, financial gain, etc.), but modifying or “tweaking” things here and there that benefit reality as a whole.

Just enough to make things a little better… and not totally screw-up everyone’s lives.

I’d still study Literature. I’d love to do comparative literature between alien civilizations. “A Compartive Study between The Heroic Myths of Romulus and Cardassia.”

Related to that, Xenolinguistics (and chronolinguistics) would be awesome. Someone has to make sure the Universal Translator is working correctly.

xeno-Archeologist or xeno-anthropologist, As a modern social studies teacher the ability to compare alien and old earth histories…just wow. Since where ever I would be studying would require a starship to get to, I would be set.

What a fun exercise!

After studying psychology and xenolinguistics I’d spend a year or two on Betazed teaching cross-cultural/Terran studies. I’d move on to, say, Bajor, to do much the same thing for several years, ultimately returning to Earth to settle down and raise a family. Probably no Starfleet, thanks, but work in intra-Federation diplomacy would be interesting!

If, on the other hand, I were to be frozen tomorrow and revived in 350 years I haven’t the faintest idea what I’d do - what a shock!

I would like to go on archaeological expeditions with professor Galen. If not, I would like to help monitor the time-stream as an analyst for the the Dept of Temporal Affairs.

I’d hang out at the all you can eat replimat all day long and spend too much time in the holodeck.

I’m with you my friend…

Bring on that VIP Pool-side at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas holodeck program…

...“yes, Beyonce…I would like some lotion on my back…(cell phone rings)...Shakira?...sorry baby, gonna take a nap… three times before noon was pushin’ it…see you at 2…”

...it’s that… or Captain of a starship…

Kirk would be proud either way…

LOL with ya both!

Very good question,

I would probably own the most exclusive and intense night club in the galaxy. Also experiment with new drugs and electronic music and bring in the best Djs in the universe. Probably on an empty M class planet. However it would most likely be off limits for Starfleet.

I could probably fund it by creating a holographic freemium game.

I wonder if Starfleet needs accountants… even if they do, I wouldn’t probably get to be part of starship crew on regular basis shut eye

A socialist society without any form of currency. I doubt Starfleet need accountants…

But the Ferengi. Now they might be looking for a few if you could work your way in to the Ferengi’s ways.

This is one of the main things about Star Trek that has never made sense to me.  They seem to indicate the they don’t use money in their society.  However, how do they get credits to pay for things in other societies. Does the federation just give everyone the same allotment of credits every year. If not, how do they pay Quark? How do people like the rich dilithium miners (from Mudd’s Women) for example fit in?  How is anyone rich or poor in their society?

If I really had no incentive to make money to get by, I’d probably be a musician, something I have always enjoyed.  If I had to be assured of making money exploring in starfleet does sound interesting.  I’d probably be a scientist.  Just as long as I’m not wearing a red shirt in TOS there’s a chance of a good career.
