There are a ton of posts about this with confused players, so figured I’d make a help post/guide how to work around this bug:
The crew management screen is bugged for displaying items icons. But the actual upgrades work fine, they just require exact matching star items. In v1.0.3 on android this seems mostly fixed, however it’s not yet fixed on iOS and there are still some rare cases where it can show the wrong icon, so the workaround and info below is still helpful.
They all just display as blanks on the first screen where you can see what it wants. (EG 0 star “Basic”)
But you can determine what you actually need as a workaround:
1. Tap the upgrade your trying to equip/build.
2. On the right the item appears as a larger icon, tap it.. (May have to wait a very long time - as much as 10-15 seconds on some devices, as it’s buggy, don’t double tap that will cancel it). Eventually another rectangular screen will pop up with the full item details, showing you exactly what star rank you require in text.
If it’s something you have to build, you can also tap on the big middle icon to get the rank required, tho if it’s one of a multi part with the little icons, you’re somewhat in trouble as they aren’t always tapable, though for the most part the smaller upper icons display the correct star rank required.
Since this is early on, most likely you have one or two star item, but you actually only require a 0 star one (will show up as “Basic” when you tap)
There are 6 Star rarities: (better to use the text as the icons are sometimes wrong, text seems always right)
0 - Basic - Grey border
1 - Common - Grey border
2 - Uncommon - Green border
3 - Rare - Blue Border
4 - Epic/Super Rare - Purple border (4* Crew are called Epic, 4* items are called Super Rare)
5 - Legendary - Yellow/Gold border
Other borders only seen in the crew menu for items not yet equipped:
Yellow - This means you have the item in your inventory ready to equip. May not be the required level to do so yet, but it’s there. Even if it say 0 on the item, that’s a bug, you have it.
Green - You have parts that can be crafted towards the needed result. Don’t necessarily have all of the parts needed, just means you can do at least 1 stage.
Blue - Not yet obtained/equipped
